About the theory test

The Driver Theory Test is a computer-based test that you must pass before applying for your first learner permit. The test ensures that you understand the rules of the road and have the theoretical knowledge needed to be a safe driver.

Test Format

· 40 questions to be completed in 45 minutes · Questions are multiple choice format · You need 35 correct answers to pass (87.5%) · Questions are randomly selected from a large database · Questions appear in English, with audio in 21 languages

County Wicklow has its own theory test centre in Wicklow town, and Dún Laoghaire has one as well — the centre there is listed as Dublin South, inside the Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre. Book whichever of the two is easier for you to get to.

After you pass

Once you pass the Theory Test, you can apply for your learner permit. Your Theory Test Certificate is valid for 2 years from the date you pass the test.
