How do I apply for a first learner permit?
To apply for your first learner permit you need to pass your Driver Theory Test, provide proof of identity (passport or Public Services Card), proof of address less than 6 months old, proof of PPS number, a medical report if required, an eyesight report, and pay the appropriate fee. You can do the whole application online at ndls.ie with a verified MyGovID and a Public Services Card. An NDLS appointment is only needed if you do not have those.
How long is a learner permit valid for?
A learner permit is typically valid for 2 years. For first-time learner permit holders, you must hold the permit for at least 6 months before taking your driving test.
What are the restrictions while driving with a learner permit?
You must always be accompanied by a qualified driver who has held a full licence for a minimum of 2 years, display L-plates on the front and rear of the vehicle, never drive on motorways, never carry passengers for payment or reward, and always carry your learner permit while driving.
Essential Driver Training (EDT)
What is EDT and why do I need it?
Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a mandatory training course for learner drivers. It consists of 12 one-hour lessons that help develop the basic driving skills you need to become a safe and competent driver. You must complete EDT before taking your driving test unless you qualify for an exemption.
How do I track my EDT progress?
Your EDT progress is tracked through your official EDT logbook, which your instructor will update after each lesson. You can also track your progress online through the RSA's My EDT portal.
Can I take EDT lessons in an automatic car?
Yes, you can complete your EDT in an automatic car. However, this means your licence will be restricted to automatic vehicles only. If you want to drive manual cars, you should complete your EDT in a manual vehicle.
Driving Test
What are the requirements to book a driving test?
You must hold a valid learner permit, have held it for at least 6 months, have completed your mandatory EDT lessons (if required), and have access to an appropriate vehicle for the test.
What documents do I need to bring to my driving test?
Your current learner permit, a vehicle that is taxed, insured and NCT certified (if required), your completed EDT logbook (if applicable), and proof of tax and insurance for the test vehicle. Since 9 March 2026 the tester must also see a valid certificate of motor insurance for the car you are testing in — a printed copy or a clear photo on your phone is accepted.
How long does the driving test take?
Allow between fifty minutes and an hour and forty for the whole appointment. Less of it is driving than people expect: the oral test and the technical checks come first, at the desk and at the car, then at least twenty-five minutes on the road, which does not include the checks, the manoeuvres or the result. Arrive early enough to be in the waiting room before your appointment time.
After the Test
What happens after I pass my test?
You'll receive a Certificate of Competency, you must apply for your full licence within 2 years, you must display N-plates for 2 years, and you're subject to lower penalty point thresholds.
How do I apply for my full licence?
Visit an NDLS centre within 2 years of passing your test, bring your Certificate of Competency, bring proof of identity and address, provide two passport-sized photos, and pay the licence fee.
Lessons and Booking
How much do driving lessons cost?
There is no single figure to publish, because it depends on which lessons you need and how many you book at once. Ask through the contact form or by phone and you will know the cost before you book anything.
Do you pick me up from home?
We start and finish at a meeting point we agree, usually near the centre; there is no pickup service.
Do you offer automatic driving lessons?
Yes, I provide automatic driving lessons in Wicklow and Dún Laoghaire. Automatic lessons suit anyone who finds clutch control awkward, or would rather not think about gears at all. All of my automatic lessons are conducted in modern, well-maintained vehicles with dual controls for safety.
Is a female driving instructor available?
Yes. I'm Ailbhe, a female ADI approved instructor. For some learners, nervous drivers especially, that makes the first lessons easier. If it matters to you, you don't have to ask for it or explain why.
What if I need to cancel or move a lesson?
There is no rigid policy published here, because circumstances differ. Tell me as soon as you know and we will work out the new arrangement between us.
